Hoboken Dance Academy is now accepting enrollment for our professional musical theater class. Classes begin January 23 and run thru Febuary 27. Class is available to children 8 and up. The students will be taught by Broadway Musical Theater Artists with Leading credits.

The training takes place in a warm and creative environment and each student is given individual attention in a supportive and nurturing learning environment. Our Broadway Intensive will cover many aspects of the craft of Broadway musical theater performance, including:

Vocal Coaching and Song Study/Technique
Choreography - including learning actual Broadway choreography
Dance Technique- including ballet, tap, and jazz
Acting Technique - including theatre games, scene study, and character development

Join us for a 2 week audition intensive. Learn how to become a working musical theater actor from Broadway Professionals. The 2 week intensive will cover:

· Song Presentation/Vocal Technique

· Original Broadway Choreography

· Scene Study

· Mock audition run exactly like a professional audition (Parents Invited)

· Special Guest Artist from Current Broadway Show Question and Answer session (Parents Invited)

*Students will be accompanied by a pianist. Sheet music must be brought to first class and song memorized.

The 2 week intensive is 3 hours each day and will be held August 4-13.

Instructors

DON BREWER recently conclude a successful run starring in the Las Vegas production of Mamma Mia. He was a member of the final Broadway cast of Les Miserables, and was recently an original cast member of the new Broadway musical 'The Pirate Queen'. His Broadway National Tour appearances include The Who's Tommy, and The Will Roger's Follies starring Mr. Larry Gatlin. Regionally, he is best known for his highly acclaimed portrayal of Joseph in Tarrytown's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream-coat.

LISA CAPPS is the only woman ever to perform all three leading ladies in the Broadway and National Touring Companies of Les Miserables: Eponine, Cosette and Fantine. She starred opposite Lea Salonga in the Philippine premiere of Miss Saigon (as Ellen) , and also appeared as Mrs. Walker in two National Touring Companies of The Who's Tommy. TV audiences best remember Lisa as 'Debbie' on the hit ABC series Growing Pains. As an instructor, Lisa has been a leading guest artist teacher for “Broadway Classroom” in New York City, headed by Broadway director Gordon Greenberg. In addition, Lisa and her husband, Don Brewer, have held musical theatre audition workshops at performing academy's in Michigan, New Jersey and Los Angeles. Having worked consistently in television and theatre, her “Business Lecture” class is highly requested and recommended. Lisa’s classes are motivating, challenging and informative. Students love the hands on business advice as well as the acting and singing techniques she offers from her own training with some of the best directors and teachers in New York City.

Kate Wray grew up in Gloucestershire, England, and trained at the Royal Ballet School in London, where she received the Teachers’ Training Course diploma, graduating in 1993. Along with her diploma, she received her teaching certifications for Cecchetti Technique and National Dance, both awarded with distinction, as well as for the Royal Academy of Dance Syllabus, Character, and Spanish Dance. Kate was a ballet instructor at schools in Gloucester and London before becoming an original cast member of the Basel, Switzerland production of The Phantom of the Opera. She spent two years in Basel, and then returned to London to join the West End production of Phantom. After getting married in 1998 and moving to New York, she joined her husband as a cast member of the Broadway Phantom, and then went on to play the principal role of Meg for four and a half years on the National Tour of Phantom, performing in over 40 cities across the United States and Canada.

Charles Bergell While in the Broadway and National Touring companies of Les Miserables, Charles had the privilege of performing the leading role of Jean Valjean. He appeared as Mssr. Andre in the 2nd National Tour of Phantom of the Opera, directed by Harold Prince, and was a member of the 2Oth Anniversary Tour of Evita. Other20credits includeChildren of Eden at The Paper Mill Playhouse (original cast recording), Father Andrew in Neil Berg's hit Off-Broadway musical, The Prince and the Pauper, and Linda' Eder's Christmas Concert, seen on Bravo Television. Charles makes frequent concert appearances in the NYC area and around the country, often performing with his friend, composer Neil Berg, in Neil Berg's 100 Years of Broadway.

Charles is the co-founder and Co-Executive Producer (with Lisa Capps, whom he met while both were in the national tour of Les Miserables) of Broadway Sings – a concert production company featuring Broadway performer (www.broadwaysings.com) . Last year, they reached a milestone by producing their first concert at Carnegie Hall.

Charles grew up in a musical family: his father, Aaron Bergell, is a professional opera singer, and some of Charles earliest memories are of sitting in opera houses all over the world watching his father perform.

Attending the prestigious Northwestern University Theatre Dept, Charles graduated in 1987 with a degree in Speech, major in Theatre. During his time there, Charles received extensive training in all aspects of acting and theatrical production, and took part in many theatrical productions, including the famous Waa-Mu20show

Charles has received vocal instruction from some of the finest teachers in the world: Ryan Edwards of the Metropolitan Opera. Lorna Haywood of Covent Gardens, Katherine Hartgrove of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Dan Ballestrero of the San Francisco Opera (not to mention Aaron Bergell, his father).

Charles is a frequent guest teacher in schools and theatre camps around the New York metropolitan area: In 2004, he helped to direct the St. Joseph Regional Highschool Production of ‘Les Miserables’, to great critical acclaim, and followed this up the next year by assisting with St. Joe’s production of ‘The Prince20and the Pauper.’ Both shows garnered rave reviews and multiple nominations and awards at the annual Helen Hayes High School Theatre Awards. For two consecutive summers, he was a teacher of voice and acting at the St. Joseph Regional High School Summer Theatre Camp. Last summer, he assisted Darren Gage and the NJ Arts Collective in the North Jersey Summer Theatre Workshop (a highschool theatre camp) in their production of "Les Miserables, and is slated to be assisting with their production this summer of "Sweeney Todd."

Ashatanga Yoga at 7:00-8:00PM

Ashtanga Yoga is a system of yoga transmitted to the modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. This method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with progressive series of postures—a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.

Modern Dance at 8:00-9:00PM
Modern dance is the break off of classical ballet. Emphasis is placed on improving anatomical awareness and alignment, increasing strength and flexibility and developing rhythmic sense.

Ms. Mandy Stallings will be instructing both of these new additions to Hoboken Dance Academy. Mandy Stallings is currently performing as a permanent company member of Pascal Rekoert’s Flexicurve Dance as well as the Cleo Mack Dance Project. She has worked professionally with Larry Keigwin, Nicole Wolcott, Neta Pulvermacher, Gerri Houlihan, Scott Rink, Brenda Daniels, and Sean Sullivan. Mandy has choreographed more than fifteen original dances and her work has been shown in venues such as Dance Forum, Peridance Center, HATCH, Cunningham Studio, SWEAT outdoors, Studio A.I.R and Galapagos Art Space. She teaches dance to children throughout the NYC Public school system and is also a registered yoga instructor, recognized nationally with the Yoga Alliance at the highest level. She is a graduate of the North Carolina School of the Arts and is very excited to be teaching at Hoboken Dance Academy!

Hoboken Dance Academy (HDA) turns 2 on November 1st. We offer a true dance education to the Hudson County community. We currently serve students from Hoboken, Jersey City, Weehawken, Seacaucus, Union City, West New York, Bayonne and NYC. We also have former students from the Peridance children's program and Broadway Dance Center children's program.Our teaching philosophy is that each student will be given the opportunity to learn dance in its purest form. The curriculum builds itself upon technique, terminology, pedagogy and execution. We believe that all of our student's are individuals and have their own reasons for entering our dance program and our goal is to give them a proper dance education whether their goal is to dance professionally or as an extra curricular activity. We believe that all children can be taught and learn in an academic and expressive environment. Hoboken Dance Academy builds strong dancers with an appreciation for dance as a true art form.

There are no "gimmicks" here. What we are offering is a free trial class to anyone who is interested in finding out more about our classes.

Our instructors have been or are currently with: Broadway's Phantom, Stomp, Drumstruck, Cleo Mack, Pasqual Rekoert’s Flexicurve, New Jersey Ballet,Royal Ballet London, North Carolina School of the Arts and the Tulsa Ballet. Instructor Union affiliations: SAG, AEA, AGMA, and AFTRA.

Hello HDA Families! Our classes are off to a great start and I am so excited for our new season. It is so nice to see all of students getting back into the swing of things. All of the students are doing so well and I look forward with my staff to watch them all grow as dancers. Our first official day off at the studio is this month is on Halloween. We also will be celebrating our 2 year anniversary next month! We have some special things planned for this year and we look forward to an amazing 3rd dance season! Here is an excerpt from Dance Magazine on choosing a studio that is right for your child.

Selecting the best dance studio and the right teacher is vital. How can you, a student or a parent, become more informed about selecting a good studio? Here are some things we believe you should investigate:

THE SCHOOL'S PHILOSOPHY: Inquire about the artistic director's vision. Everything comes down from the top. What are the principles behind the teaching methods employed in the studio? Is there a specific technique or point of view in the pedagogy that unites all of the faculty members? What are the goals of the studio?

TEACHERS: Check your teachers' training and with whom they have performed. Looking into backgrounds aids you in assessing the teachers' years of training and the quality of their past work in the field. It is also important to note that an excellent performer does not necessarily make a fine teacher. No one teacher is qualified to teach "everything." Check that the teacher is qualified to teach the styles that you are studying. [An additional resource is Dance Magazine's new series on American teachers: See the July and August issues.]

QUALITY OF TRAINING: Whenever possible, observe a class. Is the teacher professional, caring, knowledgeable, and willing to work with each and every student? Does the teacher seem to have a working knowledge of anatomy? Many chronic injuries are traced to poor movement habits learned in early years of bad training. What types of injuries, if any, are common in the studio?

What is the spirit of the class? Is the environment tense? A dance class should be disciplined, encouraging, and nurturing. What are the teacher's communicative skills? It is a teacher's responsibility not only to educate but also to stimulate, inspire, motivate, and encourage each student. Is the teacher a good role model as an artist and as a human being? Are appropriate musical selections played by a pianist or other instrumentalist? If recorded music is used, are selections organized and preplanned? Is musicality an important part of the classes?

HOW OFTEN TO STUDY: To compete in the professional dance field, early ballet training (usually started at 7 to 9 years of age) is recommended.

If you aspire to a ballet career, you should be taking ballet at least two or three times a week by the time you reach the age of 10 or 12. Serious females who desire ballet careers should take two additional pointe classes per week. At major ballet studios, many students take a minimum of five or six classes weekly.

If you aspire to a career in modern dance, jazz, or tap, it is important to note that there are codified techniques in all of these styles that require training as specific as ballet. We suggest that you attend a minimum of two technique classes weekly.

DIVISION AND SIZE OF CLASSES: How are classes divided--by age or technical ability? Division by age means that the class is composed of students with different degrees of ability. The teacher has to make the difficult decision of where to aim her lesson: top, middle, or bottom level. If a class is not physically, intellectually, and spiritually challenging, a student will not improve. How large is the class? What is the teacher-student ratio? Large classes mean less space to move and less individual attention.

FORMER STUDENTS: What are they doing? Are they performing in professional companies? Are they teaching, choreographing, and able to make careers in dance?

PERFORMANCE VENUES: Students are enchanted with performing possibilities. What are the performing venues of the studio--concerts, recitals, demonstrations, open classes?

April Adult Ballet

Classes will begin on Tuesday April 8th and runs through May 20. Note there is no class April 22. The cost for our 6 week session is $108.00. Beginner/Intermediate ballet is being offered from 7:00-8:30 PM. Our ballet instructor is Ms. Nancy Cole. Nancy is a graduate of Joffrey/New School Program receiving her BFA in ballet performance. Maia Evwaraye-Griffin will be teaching the adult jazz and tap classes. Maia received her BFA in dance from SUNY Buffalo. She has just finished her US first national tour with Molly Ringwald in Sweet Charity. Maia has also been in The Radio City Christmas Show, Aida, and Little Shop of Horrors. She is also a member of Equity and AGVA.

Michelle Donelson Renda
Hoboken Dance Academy Artistic Director

Ms. Donelson Renda has 33 years of dance experience. She also has been professionally acting for over ten years. She has trained at Broadway Dance Center, Steps, Dance Space Inc., and The Limon Institute. Her regional theatre credits include A Chorus Line, West Side Story, Fame and Hair. Michelle has had the opportunity to study at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute with Irma Saundry and Nancy Franklin. She then went on to study at H.B Studios with William Hickey, Edward Moorehouse, and Joseph Daly in NYC. She has been a member of The Screen Actors Guild for seven years. Some of her film and television credits include Comedy Central’s final season of Strangers with Candy, A Beautiful Mind, The $treet, and Finding Forrester. Michelle has had the privilege of working with Ron Howard, Russell Crow, Vivienne Cardone, Paul Betteny, Stephan Colbert and Amy Sedaris.

Ms. Donelson Renda’s vision for the Hoboken Dance Academy is to give children a solid dance and acting education, starting the very young dancer and actor with the core foundation technique. Without technique a student has no foundation to grow as a dancer or actor. Also, allowing each student to explore their own creativity and imagination in a fostering and caring environment.

Ms. Donelson Renda also plans on offering scholarship programs for dance achievement as well as to students who would not be able to otherwise participate at Hoboken Dance Academy.
